Tire Pressure and TPMS: How to Check, Fill, and Fix the Warning Light

Find the right pressure

Use the tire placard on the driver's door jamb or in your owner's manual. Don't use the number molded into the sidewall. That's the tire's maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure.

How to check

  1. Check "cold," before driving or after the car has sat a few hours.
  2. Remove the valve cap, press the gauge on firmly, and read it.
  3. Inflate or deflate to the spec, and recheck. Don't forget the spare if you have one.
  4. Check monthly and before long trips. Pressure drops as the temperature drops.
