Essential DIY Mechanic Tool Set: What to Buy First

Buy in this order

  1. Safety: jack stands, wheel chocks, eye protection, gloves.
  2. Socket set: 3/8" drive metric (8–19 mm) covers most modern cars. Add 1/4" and 1/2" next.
  3. Combination wrenches, metric, 8–19 mm.
  4. Screwdrivers and pliers, including needle-nose and locking pliers.
  5. Breaker bar for stuck fasteners. It's a lot cheaper than a broken ratchet.
  6. Torque wrench. See our guide.
  7. OBD2 scanner and multimeter for diagnosis.

Tip: buy individual sockets in the sizes you use most, rather than a huge kit full of sizes you'll never touch.
